Autumn decorating with plants: simple ideas for small spaces

  • 2 Tiempo mínimo de lectura

The quickest way to make a room feel like autumn is to add texture and one clear focal point, not to fill every surface. In a small flat that usually means a single larger green object on a table or sideboard, a few natural materials around it, and warm light in the evening. Three well-placed things read better than fifteen scattered ones.

Autumn is when people start looking at their interiors again, because they are indoors far more and the light has changed. Here are a few ideas that work in limited space and don't need repainting anything.

Go for texture rather than orange

Autumn decorating tends to default to orange, which dates quickly and clashes with a lot of interiors. Texture ages better. Think glass, wood, dried stems, moss, linen and stone, in a fairly narrow colour range of greens, browns and off-whites.

Moss is particularly useful here, since it brings a soft, matte green that contrasts well with glass and metal. A closed terrarium does much of this work on its own: glass, soil, wood, moss and living green in one object.

One eyecatcher beats five small pots

Small pots dotted around a room create visual clutter and, in practice, five separate watering routines. One larger piece placed where you actually look, on a coffee table, a dining table or a sideboard, has more effect and less upkeep.

If you have a shelf to fill, group in threes at different heights rather than spacing things evenly. Odd numbers and varied heights look deliberate; a straight row of identical pots looks like storage.

Plan for evening light

From late September you'll see your rooms in artificial light more than daylight, so it's worth checking how things look at night. Glass objects change completely under a warm lamp, and a terrarium placed near a light source rather than in a dark corner keeps working after sunset.

A small lamp beside a green display does more than a brighter ceiling light. Low, warm side lighting is what makes a room feel like autumn.

Place things where the conditions suit them

Styling and plant health don't always agree, so it's worth knowing the compromises:

  • Bright indirect light suits closed terrariums. Direct sun overheats them.
  • A sunny windowsill is right for succulents and cacti, which also handle the dry air from radiators well.
  • Dark corners and hallways suit artificial plants, since nothing living does much there through winter.
  • Keep anything living away from the top of a radiator, where the air is driest.

A few pieces that fit this look

If you want one object to carry a room, a ready-made terrarium is the simplest option. For a sunny sill, succulents and cacti give shape and structure without much care. And if you'd rather make the thing yourself, a DIY terrarium kit is a decent autumn evening project, with the added benefit that you choose the layout and how the moss and plants sit in the glass. A personalised cork lid is worth knowing about if the piece is going to be a gift later in the season, as it turns a decorative object into something that reads as personal.

In short

Autumn styling is mostly editing. One green focal point, a few natural textures, warm light in the evening and each plant placed where the conditions actually suit it will change a room more than a box of seasonal decorations.

Preguntas frecuentes
