Halloween decorating ideas with plants: 10 tips that last

  • 4 tempo di lettura minimo

Halloween decorating gets a lot better once you stop buying plastic that lives in a box for eleven months. Ten ideas built around plants, glass and natural material, most of which stay up through November and cost almost nothing to repeat next year.

Most Halloween decoration has one evening of purpose and then eleven months in a box. The ideas below are built the other way round: they use plants, glass and natural material, they look good from the end of September, and the spooky part is a small layer you add for the last week of October and take out again afterwards.

1. Turn a terrarium into a haunted scene

If you already have a glass terrarium or bottle garden on a shelf, that is your Halloween centrepiece. Drop in a set of glow in the dark miniature figures or the horror house figures and the plants suddenly read as a tiny overgrown graveyard. It takes two minutes, nothing gets glued, and everything lifts back out on 1 November.

No terrarium yet? A DIY Halloween terrarium kit is a decent rainy afternoon project with children, and the result stays interesting long after the season.

2. Group mini pumpkins in threes

Three pumpkins on a tray look considered. Fifteen scattered around a room look like a shop display. Use odd numbers, keep them close together, and mix sizes rather than colours. The natural pumpkin set in green, orange and dark red is exactly this, ready made.

3. Use foam pumpkins inside glass

Anything you put inside a terrarium has to be light and stable. Foam pumpkins weigh almost nothing, do not rot against damp moss and keep their shape season after season, which is why they beat real mini pumpkins for this one job.

4. Build the doorstep in layers

A single carved pumpkin on a step looks lonely. Two or three at different heights, a few branches, and a scatter of small pine cones around the base turns it into an arrangement. Put the tallest thing at the back and let the pumpkins overlap slightly from the front.

5. Light it properly

Warm, low light does more for atmosphere than any object you can buy. Battery tealights inside pumpkins, one lamp on the floor rather than the ceiling, and nothing white or blue. Skip real flames inside pumpkins entirely, because they cook the flesh and shorten the pumpkin’s life to a couple of days.

6. Go dark with the plants themselves

Deep purple and near black foliage does the Halloween job without a single prop. Dark leaved houseplants, black stems and a bare branch or two in a tall bottle look genuinely eerie in the evening and stay perfectly normal in daylight.

7. Fill a glass bottle with dried flowers

Dried grasses and seed heads in a big bottle catch the light and rustle when someone walks past. It is the cheapest atmosphere in the house and it stays good until Christmas, at which point you swap the stems and keep the bottle.

8. Claim a wall

Flat surfaces run out fast in a small flat. A pumpkin wall hanger next to the front door or above a radiator adds the season without taking a single centimetre of shelf, which is worth knowing if you rent and cannot drill much.

9. Give children something they can keep

Half of Halloween is a project for children with a wet afternoon ahead of them. Building a small terrarium, planting up a hollowed pumpkin or filling a jar with moss and a plastic spider all end with something they can put in their room, which is more than a paper bat manages. Our pumpkin planter guide is an easy one to do together.

10. Plan the handover to autumn and winter

The trick to not spending a fortune every season is to buy the base and rent the theme. Pumpkins, pine cones, dried stems and glass are the base, and they carry you from September to the end of November. The skulls, spiders and glow in the dark bits are the theme, and they get one week. On 1 November you remove seven small objects and the room is autumnal again instead of empty.

A note on timing

Halloween is Saturday 31 October in 2026, which lands neatly at the end of the autumn half term in most places. If you are carving a real pumpkin, do it two to four days before rather than at the start of the holiday, or it will be sagging by the time anyone rings the bell. Our pumpkin guide covers the hollowing out, the carving and how to keep it firm.

Everything that stays up longer than a week, from mini pumpkins to natural decoration, is where we would put the money first.

Domande frequenti
