Christmas decor in glass: 5 colour combinations for your terrarium

Which colours suit a Christmas terrarium? Green is already there, so the easiest approach is to pick one or two accent colours that strengthen it: gold, cream, red, silver or terracotta. Below you'll find five colour combinations that work well around a terrarium, with practical tips for applying them without going kitschy or disturbing the ecosystem in the glass.

First, the base: green as your starting point

A terrarium has one big advantage for Christmas decoration: you already start with a colour. The plants, moss and glass form a calm whole, and whatever you add should work with it. For the examples below we use the Sven XL Botanical, a tall, slim bottle made of recycled glass. The DIY kit includes the plants Calathea Lancifolia, a fern and Fittonia White Tiger, three fresh moss balls, terrarium soil, hydro pellets, activated charcoal and a step-by-step guide.

The cork has LED lighting, but it is purely decorative. The LED cork gives no grow light and doesn't replace daylight. Put the terrarium somewhere bright and use the LED cork for atmosphere only.

Rules for every colour combination

Before you look at the five combinations, three rules of thumb that apply to all of them:

  • Place decoration beside, behind or below the terrarium, never inside the bottle. Objects in the glass can trap moisture.
  • Limit yourself to two or three colours, including the green of the plants.
  • Combine at least one matte and one shiny material, such as wood and metal, for depth.

Combination 1: gold and cream

Classic and warm. Use small gold baubles, a cream ribbon and a few white LED candles. The gold picks up the light from a string of fairy lights and makes the green of the Fittonia stand out. This combination suits almost any interior.

Combination 2: pine green and red

The true Christmas classic. A few red accents, such as a ribbon or a single red bauble, are enough: red is strong and takes over quickly. A sprig of pine beside the bottle strengthens the Christmas tone without making the terrarium look green on green.

Combination 3: terracotta and cinnamon

Earthy and cosy. Combine terracotta pots, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices. This palette works well with a wooden shelf or a dark wall and gives the terrarium a warm, natural look.

Combination 4: white and silver

Cool and calm. Think white baubles, silver details and clear glass. This palette works best in a bright room and lets the green of the plants be the only real colour. It gives a modern, Scandinavian Christmas look.

Combination 5: deep aubergine and copper

For those who want something a little different. Copper baubles and a dark aubergine or espresso-brown backdrop create a rich, theatrical mood. Copper blends beautifully into the warm glow of fairy lights.

How to apply a palette in four steps

1. Choose a spot and a backdrop

A calm backdrop lets the terrarium stand out best. Place the bottle on a shelf, sideboard or Christmas table with some free space on one side.

2. Add light

Lay a thin string of warm white fairy lights loosely along the shelf, not tight around the glass. Put it on a timer.

3. Build the decoration in layers

Start with larger objects at the back, then place smaller details toward the front. Keep the number of items limited.

4. Remove what you no longer need

After the holidays you take the decoration away and the terrarium simply stays where it is, which keeps maintenance simple.

Frequently asked questions

Which colour suits a terrarium best?

Gold, cream and terracotta combine most easily with green. Red works if you use it sparingly.

Can I put Christmas decorations inside the terrarium?

It's better not to. Keep decoration outside the glass so the ecosystem stays undisturbed and you can easily clear the decor away later.

Does the LED cork give the plants grow light?

No, the LED cork is decorative only and gives no grow light. A bright spot with daylight remains important.

How much maintenance does a Christmas terrarium need?

Very little. A closed terrarium largely regulates its own water and humidity. Open the bottle for a few hours about once a month to air it.
