    • Care

An open terrarium isn’t self-sustaining, so it needs regular watering.

Succulents & cacti: water lightly every 2 weeks. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
Tropical plants: keep the soil slightly moist. Water 1–2 times a week, but avoid overwatering.
Moss: make sure te moss is not dry. If the moss is dry, soak it in water for 10–15 minutes. Gently squeeze out the excess water and place it back. This keeps it fresh, green, and hydrated.

    • Placement

Open terrariums thrive in warm, stable environments. Keep them away from radiators, heaters or cold drafts. Choose a spot with a consistent room temperature, ideally between 15 and 25°C. Bright, indirect light works best. Direct sunlight can scorch the plants and dry out the soil too quickly. A windowsill with filtered light or a shelf near a window is a perfect location. Try not to move your terrarium too often, as plants prefer a stable environment to stay healthy.

    • Decoration

One big advantage of an open terrarium is that you can freely add decorative elements inside. Unlike closed terrariums, there’s much less risk of mold or rot. Think natural materials like driftwood, stones or crystals. You can also include small figurines, shells or even miniature objects to give it a personal touch. Just make sure everything is clean and dry before placing it inside. The open structure allows for airflow, making it perfect for creative styling without compromising plant health.

    FAQ: Open terrariums

Can I place wood or bark inside?

Yes! Unlike closed terrariums, open ones don’t trap moisture so wood won’t mold.

Do open terrariums need a drainage layer?

Yes. We recommend a base of pebbles or clay granules to protect roots from excess water.

Can I combine different plant types?

Only if their care needs align. Succulents and tropicals have different watering preferences, best to group by type.

    Is this a good gift?

Absolutely. Open terrariums are stylish, long-lasting and personal. Great for birthdays, housewarmings or just because.
