A green year-end gift for your team: why a DIY terrarium is a thoughtful, sustainable way to say thank you to staff.
A terrarium is a good year-end gift for staff because it is personal, it lasts well beyond December and it avoids the usual pile of disposable items. A closed terrarium is a small ecosystem in glass that needs very little care, so employees can enjoy it at home or at their desk without any effort. That makes it a thoughtful way to say thank you to a team.
The best staff gifts share a few qualities. They feel considered rather than generic, they are useful or enjoyable for different people, and they do not create waste or obligations. Chocolate and wine are quickly consumed, and branded gadgets often end up in a drawer. A living, low-maintenance plant gift stands out because it stays visible and keeps its charm for a long time.
A gift for a team also has to work for everyone. People have different tastes, homes and levels of plant experience, so a gift that does not demand a green thumb is a safer choice than a demanding houseplant.
More and more organisations want their year-end gifts to match their values. A plant-based gift sends a positive message, and a DIY kit that is assembled by the recipient adds a small moment of enjoyment. Instead of something that is used once, the terrarium keeps growing in a closed jar for a long time.
Thanks to the closed ecosystem, the terrarium largely regulates its own water and humidity. According to the product description, watering is often needed only once or twice a year, and it is recommended to open the terrarium for a few hours once a month. That makes it suitable for busy people and for anyone who thinks they have no green fingers.
Because the terrarium is delivered as a DIY kit, the person who receives it can assemble it with the included five-step plan. This turns a gift into a small activity, which many people enjoy during the quiet days around the end of the year.
For a gift that fits on a desk or a small shelf, the Dome is a good example. It is a two-part round glass terrarium measuring 20 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height. According to the product description, the package contains the Dome terrarium, two terrarium plants (Fittonia White Tiger and Calathea Makoyana), a refill and starter package with two fresh green moss balls, terrarium soil, hydro pellets and activated charcoal, a step-by-step guide and care instructions.
Because everything needed for the terrarium is in the box, you do not have to buy anything extra. The compact size also makes it easy to ship, hand out or place on a workstation.
A short handwritten card makes a big difference. Mention something specific about the year, such as a project or a team effort. The terrarium then becomes a symbol of growth, which fits the end of the year well.
Year-end gifts for a team are usually handed out in the last two weeks before the holidays, and shipping takes time. Plan early so the gifts arrive before the office closes, and decide whether you want to hand them out in person or send them to remote colleagues at home.
If you are giving the same gift to everyone, you can make the handover a small moment: set the terrariums on a table, add a tag with each person's name and share a few words of thanks during a team meeting.
For a small team, you can give each person their own terrarium. For a larger organisation, you can combine a standard model with a personal card from a manager. For remote teams, a gift that is sent to the home address shows that you are thinking of colleagues even if they rarely visit the office. Whatever the size of your team, the idea is the same: a green gift that is easy to enjoy and does not add to the clutter.
