Black Drainage Gravel for Terrarium - 5 kg

Description

This black gravel forms the drainage layer at the bottom of your plant terrarium. It catches excess water so the roots of your plants do not sit in moisture. The dark colour shows nicely through the glass.

Why a drainage layer

A drainage layer is the first thing you put in when you build a terrarium. It keeps the water away from the soil and the roots. Without it, your plants can get wet feet and rot. The gravel lets water through but holds it at the bottom, where it slowly evaporates back into the closed system.

How to use it

Pour a layer of 2 to 4 cm of gravel at the bottom of your glass jar or bottle. The exact height depends on the size of your terrarium. After the gravel, add a thin layer of activated charcoal, then the potting soil on top. The black colour stays visible as a dark band at the base, adding a clean look to your terrarium.
